Tips. To simulate dry or broken chalk, or small pieces of scrap chalk, set the primary brush size to the 'Chalk 17-pixels' preset. Set the Brush tool to 'Clear' painting mode in the Options bar, and paint on a layer filled with black or dark green to simulate white chalk using only one document layer. This approach works well if you're in a hurry; however, separating background and foreground subject matter gives you full flexibility to alter your chalk without having to use a background color to make it visible or edit the background to remove chalk strokes. For a quick-and-dirty chalk treatment, paint with any brush set in 'Dissolve' painting mode or change the blending mode of your image layer to 'Dissolve.' The effect offers less realism but works well when you want a stylized, grainy look.
